[nɔːθ'west 'frʌntɪə 'prɔvɪns], Provinz im Nordwesten von Pakistan, 74 521 km2, (1998)17,6 Mio. Einwohner, Hauptstadt ist Peshawar. - Die Pathanenstämme der gebirgigen Grenzprovinz (Tirich Mir im Hindukusch 7 690 m über dem Meeresspiegel) wurden seit 1897 vom Pandschab aus unterworfen. 1901 wurde die North-West Frontier Province als eigene Provinz vom Pandschab getrennt und kam 1947 zu Pakistan. Ihre Eingliederung in West-Pakistan 1955 rief den Widerspruch Afghanistans hervor (Sturm auf die pakistanische Botschaft in Kabul am 30. 3. 1955), das die sprachverwandten Grenzstämme zur Bildung eines Staates Paschtunistan veranlassen will.
